  • “Medzhidi Tabia” Fortress, milea wrote 13 years ago:
Medzhidi Tabiya Fortress is located south of Silistra. It was part of the Ottoman system оf fortifications used during the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) and the Russian-Turkish War (1877-1878). The Fortress was built in the 1841 - 1853 period according to the architectural plans of the German military engineer Helmuth von Moltke (later to become General Field Marshal of the German Army), who visited Silistra in 1937. In 1847 the Fortress was visited by Sultan Abdul Mejid, after whom it was named. Another interesting fact is that the first monolithic National Revival Churches in the Silistra region (in Alfatar – 1846, and in Kalipetrovo - 1847) were built parallel with the building of the Medzhidi Tabiya Fortress. The fortress is currently included in the List of Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites.
